Barbie Getchell, President of PAST, Inc., serves as the Principal Investigator for our projects. Barbie is certified in field research by the Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) and meets the Secretary of the Interior Standards (SIS) for archaeology. Barbie received her Master of Arts degree in 1993 from the University of Durham, England, where she prepared her Masters thesis entitled Evidence from the Sutton Hoo Cemetery for the Development of Early Anglo-Saxon Kingship and her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1990 from the University of California, Los Angeles. While she was at UCLA, Barbie prepared a NSF senior honors thesis entitled Microlithic And Bead Production Analysis Used To Identify The Emergence Of Prehistoric Craft Specialization Of Santa Cruz Island, California.

For more than twelve years, Barbie has been the Principal Investigator on numerous projects that we have conducted in the central and southern areas of California. She specializes in lithic and shellfish analyses and also has extensive experience in the evaluation of ceramics and historic artifacts. Barbie also leads our new Junior Archaeologists educational program that offers children a chance to explore the world of archaeology by providing information about what archaeologist do and why, learning about local Native American lifeways, as well as, participation in a direct hand-ons experience. Aside from her archaeological studies, Barbie's most important focus is her husband and her two daughters, along with the their Labrador Retriever.

John E. Atwood, Vice President of PAST, Inc., also serves as our Contracts Administrator and Project Archaeologist. John is a full member of the Association of Environmental Professionals and has been active in California archaeology since the early 1980s. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1984 from California State University, Northridge (CSUN). From 1984 to 1989, John worked at CSUN as a Staff Archaeologist as well as an independent field technician for a couple of different archaeological consulting firms where he gained valuable experience on all aspects of the archaeological evaluation process. From 1989 to 1994, he served as the Vice President of another archaeological consulting firm where he headed up their Valencia office. In 1995, Barbie and John, established Pacific Archaeological Sciences Team (P.A.S.T.). Then in 2003, P.A.S.T. changed its business organization to become PAST, Inc.

Overall, as a project archaeologist and manager, he has been responsible for the successful management of more than 2 million dollars of archaeological research funds. John has participated in more than 335 archaeological projects and has authored over 305 cultural resource management reports. His regional experience includes survey, testing, and monitoring projects in Imperial, Inyo, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Santa Barbara, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties, as well as on Santa Catalina Island. John's interests include computer applications and photography.
