Rancho Palos Verdes, Los Angeles County, CA (1997)
In compliance with a condition placed on the excavation of geologic test trenches at a residential property by the City of Rancho Palos Verdes Planning Division, a small scale archaeological monitoring program was conducted on October 29, 1997, by Pacific Archaeological Sciences Team. The archaeological monitoring consisted of an inspection of the surface of the property and an examination of soil excavated for six geologic test trenches. Overall, the surface of the property was found to be disturbed by previous development of a residential structure and other associated improvements. Ground surface visibility on the subject property was considered very poor due to the existing vegetation (primarily grasses and ice plant). In general, the subsurface excavation of six test trenches revealed a soil sequence of culturally sterile dry adobe top soil (natural soil), terrace deposits, and volcanic breccia. No evidence of any prehistoric or early historic cultural materials or features was discovered during the investigation.
